The STARS Talk: The Conversation Most People Were Never Taught to Have
Most people are taught how to attract a partner.
Very few are taught how to actually communicate once intimacy begins.
We are rarely taught how to talk honestly about boundaries, desires, fears, relationship expectations, turn-ons, or sexual health. Instead, many people enter intimacy relying on assumptions, mind-reading, chemistry, or hope.
The STARS Talk was created to change that.
I developed the STARS Talk over a decade ago through a combination of my work as a physician, my studies in sexuality and communication, and my own personal journey of learning how to speak more honestly about intimacy, desire, and relationships.
STARS stands for:
Safety, Turn-ons, Avoids, Relationship intentions, and Sexual Health.
At first glance, it may look like a framework for discussing sex. But over time, I realized it is actually something much deeper.
The STARS Talk is really about self-awareness.
It asks questions many people have never truly been invited to consider:
Do I feel safe?
Do I know what I want?
Can I communicate boundaries clearly?
Am I able to ask for pleasure without shame?
What kind of relationship am I actually looking for?
Can I tell the truth about my body, desires, and needs?
These conversations are not always easy. But they create the possibility for intimacy rooted in honesty rather than assumption.
Over the years, the STARS Talk has grown far beyond what I originally imagined. It has been taught internationally, featured on NPR Life Kit, presented in medical and university settings, and delivered as a TEDx Talk.
At its heart, it remains incredibly simple: Make time for the talk!
Because the conversations we are most afraid to have are often the ones that change everything.
